HOW DO WE COMPOST AT LA CASITA VERDE?

We have designed and built an Aerated Static Pile (ASP) with the capacity to compost 15 cubic yards of material. Our system passively aerates or pushes air through pipes into the compost piles on a regular basis to reduce labor and speed up the process. It is 100% solar-powered, too. DROP OFF YOUR SCRAPS 

Compost your food scraps at our garden. We accept raw vegetables, fruit, coffee grounds, tea bags and eggshells. (We cannot accept cooked foods, oily foods or any meat or bones.) Bring your scraps to our garden during open hours from May through October. In exchange, we may ask you to help us with a simple task, but basically you drop it off and we will compost it for free.

OUR SCRAP PICK UP SERVICE

We are now making available a year-round, pick-up service for a charge of $20/month. The first month we charge $25 to cover the cost of the buckets. This fee will provide each customer with a re-usable bucket for scraps, weekly pick up service and a 1-lb bag of LCV compost each month.

WHY PAY FOR COMPOSTING AT LA CASITA VERDE?

• Paying for pick up helps to sustain us, your local community garden. At La Casita Verde, volunteers have converted a 40-year old abandoned lot into a vibrant green corner for growing food, learning about the soil food web and improving our city together. We need money for basic tools and materials.
• Paying for pick up recognizes the importance of composting in our urban centers and the labor it takes to turn waste into beneficial soil. Trucking waste out of the city is expensive and creates pollution. Keep food scraps local and use the compost to build a greener community.
• Paying for pick up allows you to easily continue composting throughout the year regardless of the weather or how hectic life can get.
